Just Don't Do It
The “Don’t Spit on Sidewalk” brick, dated approximately 1904, was revolutionary in the field of public health. These bricks, manufactured and dispersed around Kansas, were part of a public health campaign developed by Dr. Samuel Crumbine of Dodge City, Kansas, aimed at preventing the spread of tuberculosis in the early 20th century.
Tuberculosis patients were seen spitting on the floor of a train, which sparked Dr. Crumbine’s idea to initiate Kansas brick makers to stamp their bricks used for roads and sidewalks with this slogan.
This effort was one of the first public health campaigns in American history.
